Southern California Veterans- Fitness for Veterans

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Today I was sitting here tying to get through to the Loma Linda VA Medical Center when I started leafing through my copy of Veterans’ Health Today, a publication put out by the Department of Veterans Affairs.  I was on hold (aren’t we always) when I noticed an ad titled: 24 Hour Fitness for Veterans from the Winter 2009 magazine.

Apparently the VA has made an arrangement with 24 Hour Fitness Centers/Clubs to  provide Veterans and their families with discounted Membership rates starting at $19.99 a month.

I went online to check it out, and there are a few Clubs in either direction of my house, so several opportunites to take advantage of this special.  If you  live in So. Cal call 1-800-224-0240 or go online to 24 Fitness.com and enter code: 100825

I am a Soldier, Do you know me?

The following was recently written by a Veteran who served over 6 years in the Military.  This is a soulful, unedited piece that shows what some of our Soldiers and Veterans feel.

The 4 Hats of the 4 US Military Branches

To be a soldier is to be selfless and giving ~

This act alone is the definition of a hero, yet the soldier is mostly not thought of, spoken of or admired for their sacrifice and honor.  Sure we remember them when it is a phase, or a ribbon is called for or on a holiday where we stand up before our favorite past time event and scream “Thank you” and “We love you”.

Is this a dream?  It must be as the sentiments fade away as fast as a dream.  Is this a fad?  Or is this a sad fact that the soldier is a moment in time when we decide to make that time and only when it is convenient for us. (more…)

Preparing for Relocation to Camp LeJeune Marine Base

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Upon receiving your PCS orders, you will probably have mixed emotions.

  • Excitement – The anticipation of meeting new people, seeing new places and the challenges/changes of a new base is exciting and thrilling.
  • Stress -  You might feel stressed and worried about the process and complications of the move.  You understand the transition to a new home, school and friends for family, especially children and teenagers is never easy.    (more…)

Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial in San Diego County, CA

Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial

I just wrote a Post on my other blog about the  Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial.  For years there were lawsuits over a huge 29 foot tall cross that sat at the top of Mt. Soledad in San Diego County, CA.  The lawsuit was brought by a veteran that was an atheist, and he apparently took offense to the “Christian Symbolism” of the Cross. So in 1989 he filed a lawsuit citing the First Amendment and the separation of Church and State…..the land was owned by the City of San Diego at the time.
Anyway, after 17 years of legal battles, Mount Soledad was transferred to the Federal Government after President Bush signed legislation making this a Federal Veterans Memorial. (more…)
